Genetic drift is a random process that can cause allele frequencies within a population to change over time. Unlike natural selection, which is based on differential survival and reproduction, genetic drift occurs due to chance events. This is particularly pronounced in small populations where random events can lead to significant changes in allele frequencies from one generation to the next. For example, if a natural disaster randomly eliminates a portion of a population, the remaining individuals may have different allele frequencies than the original group.
