Mechanisms of Evolution
Gene flow, also known as gene migration, is the transfer of genetic material between populations. It occurs when individuals from different populations interbreed, introducing new alleles into a population. This process helps maintain genetic diversity and can counteract the effects of genetic drift and natural selection. For instance, if individuals from one population of plants migrate to a neighbouring population, they may introduce new genetic variations that could enhance the adaptability of the local population.
